While your computer operating system (Windows, Mac, Linux) allows you to create and name files with a variety of special characters and symbols, this is not always optimal if you intend to use or share the file between multiple operating systems, services (such as Canvas), or 3rd party applications.
To avoid these types of compatibility issues, it is recommended to avoid using the following in your file naming conventions:
- special characters, such as < > ; " ~ ` ] [ } { ! ?
- commas and periods
- lengthily file names beyond 14 characters
If you experience problems with files not being read or handled properly within a certain environment or application, please attempt to simplify your file name and see if it alleviates the issue.
